October 22: Janet Dawson

Morning (11AM): Morning (11AM): “Halftones in 4B:8S Overshot

Afternoon (1PM): Sale Setup

Morning Program: “Halftones in 4B:8S Overshot

Standard 4-shaft overshot has design potential in its blocks but zero flexibility in the halftones, which are fixed in position and appearance. Moving overshot's four blocks onto eight shafts opens up huge design possibilities for the halftones. Janet chose to explore this topic for her Master Weavers thesis project, completed in 2024, for which she was awarded a grant from the Guild. She'll explain her research project and the conclusions reached, demonstrate the computer application and website that she created to facilitate that research, describe the seminars and workshops that she's developed based on her research, and provide a not-too-technical (and therefore more useful!) overview of designing in the halftones of 4B:8S overshot.

Afternoon Program: Sale Setup

About Janet:

Janet Dawson's passion is taking weaving structures apart to see what makes them tick and then putting them back together in unexpected ways.

Janet learned to weave in 1994 and has been teaching in person and online since 2000. In 2022 she and Tien Chiu launched the Handweaving Academy, an online school and community for weavers, where Janet is the resident expert on structure, drafting, and the weaving process. Janet's mantra is "Good cloth, happy weaver!" She loves chocolate, her husband Ron, and her cats, not necessarily in that order.
