Class Description:
Using painted warps and various plant-based fibers (5/2 or 8/2 weight), learn how to optimize pattern distinction in deflected doubleweave by paying attention to value and hue. Participants come with a pre-warped loom for 4 or 8-shaft deflected doubleweave. Value and hue color studies of 5-7 possible weft yarns take place before weaving three samples.
The afternoon focuses on weaving proper weaving sett and how to manipulate your shuttles with various plant-based fibers as well as a yarn that will differentially shrink in your last sample. Be prepared to cut samples off the loom and explore different washing and finishing methods.
Day 2 Participants will compare and discuss hand washed samples for movement/deflection versus differential shrinkage, color, and pattern. Discussion informs any adjustment you might make to plan and begin weaving your warp for a scarf.
This is/is not a round robin.
Skill Level:
Participants are expected to read a draft, dress a loom prior to class, and throw 2 shuttles. The 4-Shaft draft is geared toward advanced beginners and even allows for the manipulation of 3 shuttles. One 8 shaft draft is also geared toward advanced beginners. Another 8 shaft draft is more appropriate geared toward intermediate weavers as the block threading changes quite a bit in the draft threading and treadling. There is also a lot of shuttle manipulation.
Materials required:
4 or 8-shaft loom – pre-warped with 4.5 yards plant-based warps (with at least one hand dyed)
Printed copies of workshop instructions and draft with treadling (including lift plans)
2 shuttles and one stick shuttle
5-7 weft yarn colors of various values (plant based same weight as warp)
5-7 bobbins
Color Wheel helpful
Tapestry needle for hem stitching (day 2)
Weights for weighting yarn off the back (demonstration and/or broken warp yarn)
Scissors
Phone or tablet for value studies
Pencil for your notes or adjustment
The following will be supplied:
Digital download of 4-Shaft Participant Guide as well as two 8-shaft patterns. In addition, weft of various differentially shrinking yarns are brought for sampling.

Estimated final cost $295, based on 12 students enrolled, $220 based on maximum enrollment. In addition, there is a material fee of $25. The final cost will depend on the number of students enrolled. $100 deposit due at time of registration. Final payment is due during the workshop.
