Class Description:
This workshop will teach the basics of split-shed weaving using a variation of the tied Beiderwand (extended summer & winter) pattern. This structure uses four shafts, five treadles (on jack looms), and three weft yarns that travel from selvedge to selvedge. Students will learn how to produce shading with yarn in order to create dimensional-looking imagery. Students will also learn how to make and use a cartoon on cloth that will advance with the warp and will not wrinkle when beating. Although this workshop can definitely be done on a table loom, a floor loom (jack or direct tie-up) is preferable as it speeds up the weaving process.
Students can also sample two types of Bronson/Atwater lace, piqué, polychrome extended taqueté, lampas, and a ribbed tied weave structure. All structures use the same warp and threading (with changes to tie-ups on jack looms).
This is/is not a round robin.
Skill Level:
Advanced beginner: Students should know how to warp and weave on a 4-shaft loom, following a simple 4-shaft draft.
Materials required:
4-shaft jack, direct tie-up, or table looms will need to be pre-warped with 8/4 cotton carpet warp.
Students will provide their own weft yarns (instructor will suggest acceptable yarn types).
Students will also need two 10"-14” flat shuttles and one other shuttle of their choosing that will be comfortable to use with an 8- to 9-inch-wide warp.

Estimated final cost $295, based on 12 students enrolled, $220 based on maximum enrollment. In addition, there is a material fee of $25. The final cost will depend on the number of students enrolled. $100 deposit due at time of registration. Final payment is due during the workshop.

About Deborah:
Deborah Silver is an artist, author and weaving instructor. She is a 2021 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, with a BFA in Fiber. She has applied her skill to the creation of commissioned interior design textiles, as well as to her own unique woven art. Her works have been shown in numerous juried exhibitions, receiving many awards, including First Place and the Award for Excellence in Complex Weaving at “Complexity 2018”. In 2019, she published The Technique of Split-Shed Weaving, a book for 4-shaft weavers, illustrating the split-shed weaving process and the myriad structures that can be woven with this method. She is a 2015 recipient of a Cleveland Jewish Arts and Culture Fellowship Grant and the winner of a 2019 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. Deborah continues to explore new split-shed weave structures and teaches split-shed weaving workshops internationally.
