Morning (11AM): “Warp and weft color pooling”
Afternoon (1PM): “My Journey to Weaving and Designing”
Morning Program: “Warp and weft color pooling”.
Dive in and unlock the creative possibilities of color pooling via hand painting and dyeing your warp and weft! Learn about Sydney Sogol's style of warp painting to achieve color interplay through warp pooling. We will see how she has explored various techniques from pre-woven painted warp to specific ways to lay out and tie warps to achieve distinct color layouts. Weft pooling is a technique in which the weft is strategically designed and dyed to create a vibrant dynamic color pattern that is visible throughout the width of a weaving. This technique can result in striking zig-zag patterns or more subtle watercolor-like effects. Combining both painted warps and a pooling weft reveals stunning color combinations. This is a lecture on Sogol's approach to a contemporary play on ikat in warp and weft.
Afternoon Program: “My Journey to Weaving and Designing”
Let me take you on a little journey through my weaving world. I’ll tell you how I got started with dyeing, how I explore color combinations, and how I draw inspiration from the beautiful nature around us. For me, weaving isn’t just a craft, but as a storytelling method where I share my personal connections with the world, expressed through colors, patterns, and yarns. I enjoy mixing traditional techniques with modern technology to keep the art of weaving lively and exciting. Come along and join me in this colorful, creative adventure!
About Sydney:
Sydney Sogol is a fiber artist who grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and now lives in Durham. She is a handweaver, creating unique, one-of-a-kind luxury wearable art and woven paintings. She draws inspiration from her years of studying art, ornithology, and marine biology. Sogol discovered her love for all things yarn when she was at Earlham College obtaining a BA in Weaving and a minor in Biology. She knew she wanted to pursue her passion for weaving and attended East Carolina University, where she received her Masters of Fine Art with a concentration in Textile Design. Sogol has shown locally, and nationally in juried and invitational shows.
Each piece she creates in her home studio pays tribute to a single creature’s unique beauty and story. To achieve this, she hand paints and dyes yarn that mimics the gorgeous colors found in birds and ocean creatures. Sogol then combines these colors with the complex, original patterns she designs for her 24, 16 and 8 shaft looms.
Sogol hopes that her work will encourage people to notice things they otherwise might miss about the world around them, and move them beyond being a mere passive observer of the natural world. Sydney primarily works with Tencel or Lyocell, an eco-friendly wood pulp yarn that is manufactured in a closed circuit loop, minimizing its environmental impact by reusing all water and using only non-toxic chemicals!
Sydney loves to share her passion for fiber arts by teaching about the expansive techniques that can be done using different fibers. She teaches both private and group classes nationally and internationally and is the founder, designer and weaver of Syd’s Threads.
