Description:
Experience two days of woven shibori on the loom! In this workshop, you will create your one of a kind woven fabric. Shibori roughly translates “to wring, squeeze or press” – an aesthetic tie dye. When you weave with shibori, you end up with fabric with a dye-resist of your woven pattern.
Day One: Participants will learn the two shuttle woven technique and then weave multiple samples on the same threading. Examples and demonstrations will be included in the workbook. (This is not a round robin workshop.)
Day Two: Students will cut samples off the loom to be pulled and tied. After lunch, samples will be prepped to dye using cold water dyes. Both immersion (one color) and direct dyeing (multi-color) will be demonstrated and accomplished by students.

Use of other dye equipment – buckets, dye sponges, etc.
Skill Level/Prerequisites: Students should be able to dress a loom with 10/2 Perle cotton, be able to read a draft and be able to produce a plain weave fabric. Students will learn about weaving with two shuttles — a tabby yarn and a pattern yarn. Students do not need any dye experience or any familiarity with shibori or tie dye.
Student Supplies:
Pre-warped 4 shaft loom at least 10” wide and 2 yards long (4 yards to weave samples and a scarf)
10/2 Perle Cotton (natural or white) for Warp & Tabby Weft (if you wish to use a pale colored warp/weft, please contact instructor)
12-dent reed
2 boat shuttles (3rd shuttle (stick or boat) helpful, but not required)
4-6 bobbins
Scissors
Appropriate dye clothing or Dye Apron

About Kathleen:
Kathleen has been working with fiber & fabric for over forty years, first as a theatre educator/costume designer and more recently as a fabric designer. She has been dyeing, spinning, and weaving for over twenty years. Her passions include Shibori, Ikat and researching the history of the fabric arts. She enjoys making connections between her field and larger cultural patterns, an interest that dates back to her years as a university professor and costume historian.
Although retired from the university, she taught at the Charter Oak Weaving and Spinning class in Covina CA, which is famous for it’s 100 looms in one large room! She recently moved to Portland, OR and enjoys teaching at workshops for regional and local guilds. Kathleen holds a MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Texas at Austin, where her love of weaving began.
