March 2026: Snowflake Twill

Woven by Sue Willingham

This draft appealed to me as I was searching through Handweaving.net for ideas for the Towelapalooza workshop that my daughter Janet Dawson and I have been teaching each winter in my studio on Vashon Island.  It is draft #69703, a one-shuttle weave that is complicated enough to keep intermediate weavers interested but straightforward enough for advanced beginners (I hope).  (If you don’t subscribe to Handweaving.net, check it out. It’s a treasure trove of weaving drafts!!)

I wanted to try the draft before our class, so I used some Bambu 12 yarn in three colors of blue that I got from Suzanne Cali’s stash and wove two scarves in remembrance of her.  I sett it at 36 epi and that worked well to keep the motifs square.

The Towelapalooza project is on a graded warp of 8/2 cotton sett at 22 epi.  This draft would be nice on a striped warp, I think-- a great snowflake holiday project.

Bio:

Sue writes: “I started weaving after Janet did and loved it just as she does.  Since 2010 we’ve taught classes together in my studio each year.  It’s a delight to spend time with fellow SWG members and other weavers and also to start folks out on their weaving journeys.”
